Purpose:

To investigate the status of all the biomedical science journals published during last 66 years from Journal of Chosun Medical Association 1948 to Maxillofacial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery 2014 in Republic of Korea.

Methods:

List up by comparing the titles of the enlisted journals and remove the ceased journals in the following databases: National Research Foundation of Korea’s Korea Citation Index (KCI), Korean Association of Medical Journal Editors’ KoreaMed, Korean Federation of Science and Technology Societies’ NEST in biomedical and pharmaceutical area, and Medical Research Information Center’s KMBase. Out of 1,105 journals published during last 66 years in Republic of Korea, 620 journals currently publishing were analyzed.

Results:

We report status of journal publication by subject, language, frequency, international citation index database enlistment. We have classified and characterized the publication status and distribution trend into three phases: forming, growing and mature phase.

Conclusion:

Based on the results, we propose a plan to expand the international distribution of biomedical science journals published in Republic of Korea. We suggest that the national bibliography for the total of 620 journals including abstracts should be made.
