Bibliometric studies on the trend of the scholarly publication by different types and characters of institutions and subjects are important challenges for medical librarians. Important considerations for this standardized process for the analysis include characteristics of subject domains, types of published articles, and search strategy on different databases. These analyses can be used as a baseline data for developing strategies for research support and operations of institutional resources. Our approach is to produce long term trends data for different academic domains or organizations, for different types of articles by searching and collecting informations based on Web of Sciences database. Also important approach is to ask the academic faculty to analyze the collected data by their own so that their analysis is based on their understanding of the academic identities and of current practical issues. Key issues are developing practical search terms and their combinations so that we can collect most appropriate data. Special considerations are similar names of different universities and different abbreviations for a same university. Also different universities have different organizational charts and names of departments and their coverage of academic specialties are different. The task of the medical librarians therefore are to produce objective standardized data on different types of articles, on different subject domains, on different organizations or sub-organizations and on different year periods at regular intervals. The research system has two different functions; one is to produce the data and the other to analyze the data. Production of useful data can be accomplished by the library team whereas the analysis of the data would be the role of the office of research affairs or research supporting units at colleges and schools.
